The
New Hope Migrant and Refugee Centre maintains an ongoing role
in monitoring issues affecting the settlement of refugee and
migrant communities in the region.
The
region is comprised of the following local government areas:
Bayside, Frankston, Glen Eira, Kingston, Melbourne, Monash,
Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip, Stonnington and Yarra. Through
the Community Planning and Research Unit, various sources of data
are drawn together to develop a picture of the communities settling
in the region and to identify service gaps and
issues.
- Resourcing
the Regional Settlement Planning Committee
- Provides
a channel for communication, cooperation and coordination
between local, state and federal government services, non
government agencies and migrant and refugee communities on
settlement
issues
- Operates
on the basis that it is the responsibility of all spheres of
government
to ensure that there is full access and equity in relation
to
the provision of settlement services
- Statistical
analysis of settlement trends
- Research
on settlement needs of communities
- Development
of community profiles
- Development
of new projects/services in response to unmet settlement
needs
- Fostering,
resourcing and assisting community groups to enhance
community capacity
building and independent functioning
- Improving
community’s access to community facilities including Kallay St and
Malaleuca Dve Community Centres
- Supporting
community capacity building through
training
and skills development opportunities
- Assisting
community groups with funding submissions.
- Resourcing
the South Sudanese Community Action Network
- Service
Provider Information and awareness raising activities
- Cross
cultural training/presentations
- Special
events and forums eg Refugee Week, Harmony Day
- Community
